Don’t Spam Me, Bro

I don’t mind getting information pieces from various MMO’s I have signed up for. I actually appreciate being kept up to date on various things, without having to click or find them.

Picking on WoW (I unsubbed a while ago.. again) a bit here as I got an email from them today. After the break.

I am only picking on them because I expect more from a marketing giant. I mean, if you are going to spam, at least target that spam.

Little bit of laziness. I have done the dungeon finder. Look at my 300+ runs over 3 level 80’s. Quest Tracking? What, did you guys buy Questhelper finally? Talent tree redesign – ok THAT’s new – you got me! Icecrown Citadel – my 10/12 in both 10’s and 25’s tell you I’ve been there. My 6/12 Hard modes does too.

To be fair, if I have been away from the game for a year, those things might entice me. I just think there is no excuse when you have an armory system that tracks every little thing you do in game each step of the way, that you don’t filter out that message and create a handful of different ones – and target the message to that specific customer group. That is simple marketing 101, and I’m surprised they wouldn’t take advantage of it. It’s actually mildly insulting that they think that message would get me back.

I suppose that when you are the ‘biggest’, you don’t even have to try any more.

  1. Yeah, you were kinda asking for that. 🙂

“I suppose that when you are the ‘biggest’, you don’t even have to try any more.”

They really do seem lazy sometimes. They have all that data *they make public* but don’t bother to use it? Little in the way of loyalty rewards? Then again, if they did, maybe they would tip people off that they *do* have all that information, and we’d see more blowback.

…and now I’m wondering if a third party could get away with scouring the Armory and making targeted ads. Hrm…

  2. They could easily (see my blog link of Amory Data Mining) – good thing is they wouldn’t have the corresponding email contact info..

Then again, do the WoW forums allow private messaging?

  3. I’m not sure, not having an account on them, but I suspect they do. Spam advertising via the forums? Stranger things have happened.
